Car Service vs MOT: What’s the Difference?

People often use “MOT” and “service” as if they mean the same thing, but they do very different jobs. Here’s a quick guide to what each one covers, and why it pays to do both.

What is an MOT?

The MOT is a legal test that checks your car meets minimum road safety and environmental standards. In England, Scotland and Wales, most cars need an MOT every year once they’re three years old, and driving without a valid MOT can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.

An MOT checks things like lights, brakes, tyres, steering, suspension, seatbelts and emissions, but it doesn’t include changing your oil or replacing worn parts. It’s a snapshot of your car’s condition on the day of the test.

What is a car service?

A service is preventative maintenance. It keeps your car reliable, efficient and safe between MOTs, and catches small problems before they turn into expensive ones. Depending on the type of service, it can include:

  • Engine oil and oil filter change
  • Air, fuel and cabin filters (usually on a full service)
  • Checks on brakes, tyres, steering and suspension
  • Fluid level checks and top-ups
  • Lights, battery and wiper checks

Interim or full service?

  • Interim service: usually recommended every 6 months or 6,000 miles. Ideal if you cover a lot of miles.
  • Full service: usually every 12 months or 12,000 miles. A more thorough check with more parts replaced.

Your handbook will show the service schedule recommended for your car.

Should I service my car before its MOT?

It’s a good idea. A service before your MOT is a chance to spot and fix things like worn brake pads, blown bulbs or low tread before the test, which can help you avoid a fail and a retest.

Keep your records

Hang on to your service history. A full record helps keep your car reliable and can make a real difference when it’s time to sell.
